Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Voting is the foundation stone for political action.”
If there is one thing that is certain about America, is that the right to vote is a sacred principle of our republic. Ensuring that all eligible citizens have easy access to the ballot box is fundamental to the health of our democracy. And for too long, many Floridians – often people of color and low-income communities – have been subject to increased barriers to their right to participate in the political process.
FCV believes that when we uplift voters – ALL voters – our democracy is able to function for the prosperity of all. When we all vote, the People’s voice is accurately represented in local, state, and federal government. When we all vote, we build a just, equitable future for Florida. When we empower Floridians to act on their right to vote, we allow them to be a part of the process, which almost always benefits our drinking water, natural lands, and environmental safeguards.
Disenfranchising voters, especially those who are Black, Latino, or Native American, is not new in Florida. The voting rights battle we are fighting today is merely a piece of a long history of voter discrimination.
For decades, Florida’s lawmakers have used legal loopholes and creative interpretation of laws wiggle their way out of equality and justice. This must end now.
“The time is always right to do what is right,” said Dr. King. And now is the time to let all Floridians vote.
