On October 6, the Miami Climate Alliance – in partnership with 350 South Florida, Sierra Club Miami, The CLEO Institute, Catalyst Miami, The New Florida Majority – hosted the Miami Rising Mobilize Seminar and Training. This seminar focused around ways to engage and educate South Florida’s black and brown communities on solutions to climate change and the extreme changes occurring in the weather. This seminar also addressed ways the community can transition to 100 percent clean renewable energy that is accessible to all. Miami-Dade County is one of Florida’s frontline communities dealing with the immediate impacts of climate, ranging from King Tide to the newly developing red tide on its shores.
Olivia Nedd, our South Florida Lead Organizer, joined the seminar and training along with other organizers, community leaders and local volunteers in the Miami climate movement to learn strategies and best practices around developing community leaders. Breakout sessions held by the Miami Climate Alliance and partners in the event offered solutions and discussions around issues such as the 836 Extension and ways to engage and educate elected officials.
