Tallahassee, FL (April 21, 2022) – FCV’s Civic Engagement Director, Jalisa Giles, responds to the passage of Governor DeSantis’ Congressional Maps and today’s peaceful sit-in in the Florida House of Representatives:
“Florida Conservation Voters stands in solidarity with the Florida House Democratic Leaders that participated in today’s peaceful sit-in at the Capitol. The Governor’s unprecedented attempts to disenfranchise Florida’s Black voters by reducing their representation in Congress by 50% is outrageous and should have never been entertained as a serious proposal by the state legislature. However, legislative leaders seem more concerned about appeasing a Governor desperate for national attention than respecting the votes of millions of Floridians. This attack is not the first time the state legislature has voted to diminish the power of Florida’s Black community, and sadly, it may not be the last. But, no matter how long it takes, we will never give up the fight for equal rights. Democracy only works when it works for all of us.”
