SB 1808, Immigration Enforcement: A bill that separates families in Florida.
This bill attacks immigrant children and would require all law enforcement agencies that operate county detention facilities to enter into a 287(g) agreement, which would deputize local law enforcement to perform functions of federal immigration enforcement agents (ICE). The bill also prohibits all state and local government contracts with transportation companies from transporting undocumented people into Florida, even though currently no such contracts exist. This legislation targets vulnerable children and is another piece of the false “immigrant threat narrative” unjustly fueled by conservative politicians in Florida in an attempt to criminalize immigrants for political gain.
As a climate and racial justice program, Chispa Florida, with the full support of our entire FCV organization, recognizes that people migrate under different circumstances, and all too often, the drastic forces of climate change cause widespread harm and displacement of communities. We need legislation that treats immigrants with the dignity and compassion that all people deserve. Laws that put local resources into massive detention of immigrants are unjustified. We need your support as we urge governor Ron DeSantis to reject this proposal and protect all children in Florida. Take action. Urge Gov. DeSantis to VETO this bad bill before it becomes a dangerous law that will hurt families across Florida.
